Medieval Swordsmanship - DFW (Brian Price)
Thursday, 07:45 - 09:45 PM Sep 6th - Dec 13th 2007 Contact: Brian Price
NOVICE & INTERMEDIATE SESSIONS CONCURRANT
This is our core course for the Medieval swordsmanship curriculum, drawn directly from Fiore dei Liberi's 1409 treatise, Fior di Battaglia.
Novices focus on a proven, programmed course that introduces Fiore's amazing martial art through the spada a dui mani (the sword in two hands), starting from the footwork, guardia, guardia transitions, blows, thrusts, striking to cover, cutting kinesthetics, and six defensive plays that teach the swordsman how to retrieve the initiative in a fight by managing control of the opponent's weapon. Light sparring and testing can be part of the curriculem at the student's option.
Intermediate students work through the tactical framework presented in the treatise presented in Fiore's eight zhogo largo plays. Different concepts of time and distance management are also included, and the student increasingly spars to develop tactical skills.
Although the course is listed as MTh, the coursework is done on Thurs. while Monday is open for breadth work or reinforcement. Some students use this time to explore permeatations of this amazing system, while others apply their studies to allied endeavors, such as stick fighting or SCA combat. Attendance at the Monday course is optional but is free with sign up for the main course.
