Primary Foci: Italian medieval sword in two hands, armoured combat, adaptation of material to SCA combat contexts
SSG Columbus is now in session as of March, 2009.
Initially, we begin with Italian medieval Sword in Two Hands. Once comfortable with this foundational material, we plan to expand into various breadth areas, dependent upon specific interests identified. Areas in which interest has already been expressed include German Longsword, Italian Poleaxe, Daga, Lanza, German and English Sword and Buckler (MS I.33 and George Silver).
RECENT NEWS
Monday, May 4 Machonna led our stretching exercises, after which there was a brief discussion of the evening's format. Rather than begin with abrazare, as usual, this evening we instead began with posta drills. From there we proceeded to work on a daga play where the Scholar defends against an overhand strike (downward Punta from Posta di Donna) by blocking with Longa, stepping in to deliver a counter attack (the same Punta), and countering an attempt to clinch by the Zugadore by breaking their Elephante with pressure against the knee using a volta stabile. Following that, we took turns with a single pair of Scholari practicing striking to cover with swords and protective headgear. Each pair first established their range at Mesura Longa, then engaged striking to incrosa three times. Each time we paused after contact, evaluating who had made cover, and whether they retained their Elephante and Lione.

CURRENT CLASSES
Fiore's Spada a dui mani: We will begin with motion and balance drills, and non-contact games, progressing gradually to controlled limited contact plays, limited directed sparring, and finally to free sparring.

EQUIPMENT
Non-Contact Drills:
Non-damaging shoes (period leather soled shoes, china flats, et cetera). One 48" x 3/4" wooden dowel (the one with the red color-coded end).
Contact (non-sparring) Drills:
Non-damaging shoes, groin protection (eye protection recommended).
Sparring (guards and cuts):
Helm or heavy mask with rear protection, arming coat, gorget, groin protection, knee/elbow pads, hand protection.
Full-Contact Sparring:
Helm, arming coat, gorget, groin protection, knee/elbow pads, hand protection, rebated longsword or trainer.
