The Boston Area Branch of the SSG, Inc.
Established: 2006
Instruttore: Charles Deily -- ssgforum AT comcast.net

Scribe/Reporter: Noah Goldman

Primary Foci: Italian medieval sword in two hands, azza, daga, abrazare.

On Feb. 20th, the Boston Area group was promoted to a Branch. In addition, Charles was recognized as an Instruttore for the Schola!

The Boston Area branch has an open meeting weekly in Watertown, MA, near Bridge Street, and during the nice summer weather, one on Saturdays in Arlington, MA.  The Brookline meeting has some site restrictions--contact Charles (email: ssgforum AT comcast.net ) for more details on joining us, or check out our Meetup pages.   Any cancellations (due to weather, etc.) are ALSO made on the Yahoo! group .

CURRENT CLASSES
We're back to our regular practices--let us know if you want to start!

Watertown Practice: Thursday evenings, 7:00 - 9:45, Watertown
57 Stanley Ave, Watertown, MA
(Google Maps has been corrected to show that you can only reach Stanley Ave from Waltham St, not Pleasant St--but be careful if you're working from older maps!)

Currently, we're all working on Fiore's dagger and abrazzare plays for the first half of class, then splitting up to work on different material.  We're also armouring up so the last week of every month can be Spada in Arme and Poleaxe week.  Different members are currently working on:

SWORD IN TWO HANDS (Level 1):  Students work on structured progression through the SSG core curriculum, mostly following the DFW syllabus and Brian's book. The class covers vital body mechanics, strikes and guards drawn from Fiore's poste and segno.

ZOGHO LARGO (Level 2):  Students are following the SSG curriculum, working on Fiore's Zhogo Largo, and analyzing motions with the tre tempi and tre volte.

ZOGHO LARGO INTEGRATION (Level 3): Students work on integrating Fiore's Zhogo Largo plays of the sword into sparring.

ZOGHO STRETTO (Level 4): Students are expanding their understanding of Fiore by looking at his close plays.

Brookline Practices are limited due to site restrictions at the school we work from.  Please email Charles (address above) for more information

FIORE's DAGA (Level 1): (now back to Mondays)  Started by request of my colleagues--I work at a great school!  We're working principally on Fiore's dagger and abrazare, using Colin Hatcher's excellent analysis and curriculum.  We're on for Mondays through the end of the school year!

YOUTH CLASSES (next planned Winter semester 2011)

Arlington Practices Robbins Farm, Arlington MA 53 Eastern Ave, Arlinton MA -- go downhill past the playground and garden.  We'll try to have a banner up for our Saturday morning Level 1 practice. THIS IS OUTDOORS, AND WILL BE CANCELLED WITH POOR WEATHER.

PAST EVENTS

BOSTON SWORDPLAY GATHERINGS at SSG BOSTON
February 21st, 2010
December 13th, 2009
August 23rd, 2009
May 31st, 2009
Some of the only periodic cross-group practices in the country!  Thanks to our friends at Forte Swordplay & Academy of Knightly Arts for coming together to plan these.

2010 SSG SYMPOSIUM
May 30th/31th, 2010
Bryan Johnson and the Atlanta study group hosted this event this year, and SSG Boston hoisted our flag at the other end of the East Coast.  Wonderful classes, tournament, free-sparring, and seeing old friends again!

Poleaxe Workshop
February 20th, 2010
Brian Price came up to work on poleaxe with a small group of SSG Boston and Academy of Knightly Arts.  Only one broken poleaxe, though lots of tired players by the end of the day.  The inevitable daga contra azza was followed by dinner at Charles & Deb's.  More fun than you can shake a poleaxe at!

2009 SSG EAST COAST GET TOGETHER
May 30th/31th, 2009
This was one of our best Get Togethers yet!  We were honored by the presence of Brian Price, Colin Hatcher, Frank Petrino (and others of SSG New Jersey), and Patrik Olterman even crossed the pond to join the festivities!  We studied daga and abrazzare, azza, practice cutting, had testing and a special set of classes for our youth members and even hosted the latest regional open sparring block.

WEEKEND STUDY & PROGRESS TESTING
April 4th & 5th, 2009
Frank Petrino, the East Coast Technical Director, came (again) to do some Compagno-level testing.  We also made videos, played with the lanza, and (as always) swapped ideas and planning for the East Coast SSG.  Sunday included a block of regional open sparring at Forte Swordplay.

WEEKEND STUDY & PROGRESS TESTING
February 21st & 22nd, 2009
Frank Petrino, the East Coast Technical Director, came out to do some Compagno-level testing of our afterschool group.  The rest of the casual weekend was spent swapping ideas, exercises, planning for the East Coast SSG and giving our Scholari Minore a chance to practice teaching some ideas they're exploring.  Also included a block of open sparring with Academy of Knightly Arts and Forte Swordplay.

BOSKONE TOURNAMENT/DEMO
February 14th, 2009
At the kind invitation of Kunstbrueder (Forte Swordplay) and the Higgins Sword Guild, Noah, Deborah and I played in an invitational tournament at Boskone, a local science fiction convention.  Before the tournament, I demonstrated some Daga Contra Spada, and we had a lot of fun!

Summer in the Park (Levels 1-4): Saturday/Sunday afternoons in Robbins Farm, Arlington MA
With the good weather, it's more fun to play outside. In the summer we meet to work on more practice, breadth weapons (usually azza and daga), Zhogo Stretto and whatever else we'd like at the time. Usually discussed on the Yahoo! list.

2008 EAST COAST GET TOGETHER
May 3, 2008 - May 4, 2008
We hosted a gathering of local Western Martial Arts groups, including Forte Swordplay, Kunstbruder and Academy of Knightly Arts. There was also free sparring and prizes for Charles's Pas D'Armes on Saturday night. Brian Price came out (and stayed for an additional half-day) to conduct SSG-specific testing and training.

ABRAZZARE E DAGA SEMINAR with Colin Hatcher
Feb. 23, 2008 - Feb. 24, 2008
Colin's acclaimed course began with the cinque prese, falling safely, and applying locks, then tactics, drills and plays drawn from the First and Third Daga Remedy Masters. There was also open sparring on Saturday night and rank testing by Colin.

2007 EAST COAST GET TOGETHER
June 30, 2007 - July 1, 2007
Schola Saint George - New Jersey came up for a day and a half to train with us. Each group taught a class presenting ideas and what we'd been working on, and we filled in the time with practice cutting, sparring with spada (sword) and lanza (spear), and talking over a barbeque.

FIRST MASTERS OF BATTLE SEMINAR with Brian Price
Feb. 24, 2007 - Feb. 25, 2007
Brian came out to put us all on track with an overview of the first two curriculum levels. Ably assisted by Frank Petrino, we kicked our evening study group off right with new drills, games, theory and practices, and corrected the training of our afternoon group.
